| WELCOME | Welcome to ImpeachNow.orgOutraged by the tragic wrongs committed by the President and Vice President and mindful of our responsibility as citizens to create a peaceful, just and democratic nation, we are part of a rising movement across the country pursuing the course of action prescribed by the Constitution to remove from office leaders who have betrayed our trust. President Bush and Vice President Cheney must be held accountable for deceiving the public and Congress in order to send our soldiers to kill and be killed in an illegal, unnecessary war. As a result nearly 600 American soldiers have been killed, 20,000 have had to be medically evacuated and as many as 55,000 Iraqi civilians have died. This mayhem continues every day. Our leaders have also exploited the fear generated by the terrorist attacks of 9/11 to ram legislation through Congress and issued edicts that abuse the rights of the citizens and non-citizen residents of this country. We believe that our chief executives would be found guilty of "high crimes and misdemeanors," perhaps even "treason," all of which the Constitution sets forth as grounds for impeachment. We dare not wait for the impending election because of the continuing harm our leaders are doing and the desperate action they may take to remain in office. The overthrow of the democratically elected president of Haiti which the Bush administration engineered contrary to US and international law is a warning of what may yet come, such as US interventions in Venezuela and Cuba. Elections are not the way the American system of justice deals with criminal suspects. While elections are driven by partisanship, the American people and members of Congress must rise above party to insure that justice is done. The impeachment process was set forth in the Constitution for this purpose. Because both houses of Congress and the presidency are controlled by the same party, impeachment can occur only if there is a groundswell of public demand for congressional action. While the Republicans want to defend the administration and their own congressional majority, the Democrats are wary of rocking the boat too much for fear of jeopardizing their chances to replace the Republicans. Our task is to move members of Congress to rise above partisanship because our nation’s conscience, honor and security have been profoundly impaired. Members of Congress must be made aware of the depth of public revulsion at what has been permitted to occur and made to understand that their own re-election hinges on their support for impeachment. The National Coalition to Impeach Bush & Cheney seeks to contribute to the movement for impeachment, recognizing the good work that other organizations already have undertaken in this direction. The NCIBC urges that as many members of the House of Representatives as can be promptly assembled co-sponsor a bill of impeachment. Filing it would initiate an investigation by the House Judiciary Committee to determine whether there are grounds to impeach, that is, indict, Bush and Cheney because they are suspected of wrong-doing. If the House votes to impeach, the Senate must try the accused to determine their guilt, which carries with it removal from office. When the Senate takes over the case, NCIBC groups will turn to lobbying senators. We recognize that this is an uphill struggle and that only a groundswell of pressure by citizens will bring to justice those who have misled the nation. Local groups and individuals lobby their House members; national groups lobby the entire House or key members. NCIBC does outreach to these organizations and individuals, providing them with information about the grounds and process of impeachment, while updating them about new developments and how the effort is proceeding across the country. When organizations and individuals lobby representatives to co-sign a bill of impeachment, they can strengthen their case by adding that they are part of an organized national movement urging all members of Congress to act. Neither you nor your representative are alone but part a much larger effort. NCIBC is a cooperative network. It does not have a steering committee or command structure. It does have a committee of facilitators in the San Francisco Bay Area which invites others to join it. It welcomes constructive criticism and recommendations.. It is entirely non-partisan. We respond to e-mail and telephone and inquiries via this website. Together, it can be done! |
