Sample Message by an Individual or Organization to Your Member of the House of Representatives

You can write a snail mail letter, e-mail or fax. Snail mail is delayed by surveillance procedures looking for anthrax infestation, etc. Therefore, it is better to use one of the two electronic forms of communication. If you use e-mail, most members of Congress prefer that you write in the electronic messaging system provided on their websites. Getting to your congressperson’s website is easy. Just type in the name of Rep._________ in the search space of your browser. His or her homepage will appear. There will probably by a space marked "Contact." Click that and you will be asked to identify yourself and your address. Often members of Congress only read mail from their constituents. The text space is usually expandable for your message. Unless you have some detailed information to convey, it is well to keep your message to 600 words. Model letter:

Dear Rep.--------------:

I wish to urge you to co-sign a bill to impeach President Bush and Vice-President Cheney or co-sign a resolution requesting an investigation into whether they have committed impeachable acts. [Or, "On behalf of name of organization I wish to urge…."]

I am [or We are] dismayed at their having led our country to war based on lies [or misrepresentations] about the threat posed by Saddam Hussein to the United States and its allies. At very least they exaggerated the information made available to them by the nation’s intelligence agencies or were negligent in evaluating the material provided to them. Their charges that Saddam Hussein possessed weapons of mass destruction and that he was somehow connected with the terrorists who attacked our country on 9.11 have now been exposed as false. This is inexcusable considering the lives of American soldiers and Iraqi civilians that have been wiped out or maimed.

It will also be persuasive to explain why you think that it is insufficient only to work to defeat Bush and Cheney in the election and how an impeachment investigation, even if incomplete or cut off at some stage, would be useful in defeating Bush and Cheney at the polls. End your message with a strong statement, such as what you regard is at stake–the saving of lives, our democratic system, not provoking further terrorist attacks, our relation to former allies, etc.
