From Impeachment To ResistanceJanuary 21 –The Steering Committee of the National Coalition to Impeach Bush and Cheney recognizes that further efforts to impeach the malefactors are unrealistic at this time and therefore intend to suspend activities in that direction. The reasons are obvious: the re-selection of Bush and Cheney now with an apparent 3 million person majority, although this may be based on fraud and the suppression of the vote, strengthens their grip on the executive branch. Moreover, the enlarging of the Republican majority in both the House and Senate makes any attempt at impeachment in the near term unviable. Nevertheless, we recognize the much deserved impeachment of the nation’s leaders may become feasible, particularly as the quagmire in Iraq deepens and the abuses of the Bush cabal outrage the public even more. What most concerns us and always has, has been the policies of Bush and Cheney, as objectionable as they are as persons and deserving of punishment. This needs to be said because while we may not be able to remove them from office in the near term, we can begin organizing to disable their policies now and succeed in the foreseeable future, even within a year. Although this too will take time and an immense effort on the part of citizens, it is doable. This would involve a ratcheting up of the peace movement and re-framing it. It would require a concerted effort to incapacitate the war machine by economic sanctions launched by citizens against the military-industrial complex, by increased anti-recruitment tactics as the war itself is substantially cutting back on re-enlistments, by supporting the conscientious non-compliance of the military and by other forms of civil disobedience. But before turning to these in any detail, a few brief words about the present situation as we see it. It was our outrage against this war on Iraq based on the Bush administration’s lies, its violation of the UN Charter and contempt for world opinion, its legitimizing of the torture of prisoners and unconscionable mayhem inflicted on civilians that brought many of us to the struggle for impeachment. The war continues with no end in sight, and so must our efforts. It would be morally intolerable for us not to act now but wait for the killing to reach a level that would cause the American public finally in revulsion to turn on its leaders. We cannot in good conscience wait for that to force an abandoning of the administration’s imperialist dream to establish a permanent military presence in the Middle East to control its oil and impose its will on Iraq’s neighbors and indeed our own allies by controlling the oil spigot. That level of public outrage might not ever be reached because the Bush cabal has been a master at generating fear that it uses to gain support for its policies. In any case we cannot stand idly by while the killing increases. |
